5 Steps To Becoming A Social Media D-bag

It wasn’t really a surprise when we got word of the 15,000+ self-proclaimed “Social Media Gurus” on Twitter.

Tremendous News has made a video (with the help of Xtranormal) poking fun at the thousands of “gurus” and its pretty much spot on, sad, but spot on.

Check it out and have a laugh at the expense of all those “Super Social Media Guru Cowboy Maverick Experts”.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

On a side note, I know I havent been bringing much quality content. Ive just been super busy finishing my final semester at school. I have a few ideas for some articles so stay tuned for those.

Why Twitter is such a big deal

You’ve read (or at least heard) it all, about how Twitter is rapidly growing, and continues to do so. You’ve heard all about how its the next big thing, and that it may be a revolution.

There are plenty of articles and posts on why Twitter is so important, and yet many people that I have talked to still don’t get it. They have an image of people tweeting random useless chatter and cant get past that. So rather than create a list of importance, here is a quick and simple explanation of why Twitter is so important and useful.

The concept is simple, a microblogging service permitting updates (tweets) no longer than 140 characters.

Again, whats so revolutionary about it?

Its a global water cooler, where everyone gathers to talk about whatever is on their mind. And the search tools available allow anyone to listen in and join this global conversation. You can find Trending Topics, and check out what others are saying about you, your brand, products, or company.

Its the quickest way to get the latest news. People publish updates as the story happens. Its open, while it may be biased based on the views of the person who tweeted the news, its often an outlet of self expression mixed with the news story, so a diversified search will help paint a bigger picture.

In June 2009 when the election results in Iran were contested, resulting in mass riots, the oppressive regime censored many means of communications. The people of Iran turned to social media networks, mainly Twitter, to send updates into the world to see the aftermath of backlash, and to bypass such restrictions in the freedom of speech.

Think of it as a universal RSS feed. Instead of subscribing to one source of info, or subscribing to several sources, simply follow the people or organizations that interest you, and watch your twitter stream fill with quick tips and useful links from various sources.

I have only scratched the surface of why Twitter is so useful. If you haven’t already, go and create an account, search and follow your favourite people and places. Download and install applications for your phone or computer to access Twitter from. Start tweeting, and listen to others.

See for yourselves and let me know why you think Twitter is such a big deal.

Windows 7 launches, so does a new Ad Campaign

Windows 7 has officially launched today, and besides the generally positive reviews, Microsoft has launched some clever new ads.

If you dont know, Windows 7 is the successor to Vista, which has been reworked from the ground up to address a lot of the issues that people had with Vista.

So Microsoft listened, and they took the many negatives and turned it into a positive.

Their latest ad features people talking about what they wanted from an OS, and that Windows 7 was “my idea”. Great way to showcase the power of the community.

Click read more below to see the ad and some of Microsoft’s other promotional efforts.

Honda’s Crosstour Facebook nightmare

I know this is a bit late, but it was my intention to wait until the dust has settled and analyze the situation in full detail.

When Honda originally started posting teaser shots of its upcoming Crosstour (a wagon/estate version of its Accord sedan for the US market) on its Facebook page, I thought it was nice to see them practice some marketing over social networks, albeit a misguided attempt.

After all the teasers, when Honda finally revealed the Crosstour, it was met with alot of negativity, to say the least.

Things were made even worse when the Manager of Product Planning decided to post his positive opinion of the Crosstour.  What is so wrong about  that? Well, this individual decided not to disclose his employment at Honda which only led to more backlash.

Twitter gets YouTube star fired

Its not the first time we’ve heard of someone getting fired because of their tweets, but this time, things are a bit different.

Tim Chantarangsu, better known as TimothyDeLaGhetto on YouTube, was fired from California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) for a tweet that expressed his dissatisfaction with the company’s  new uniforms.

Tim’s tweet, which went like this @calpizzakitchen black button ups are the lamest shit ever!!!” was not received kindly by the company.  CPK then continued to dig through his Twitter stream where they found another tweet referring to the pizzeria as “Calipornia Skeetza Kitchen”, again, they didn’t take this kindly.

Long story short, they managed to track Tim down to the location he worked at, where he was fired. (check the video for the full story) (re-uploaded)

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

Although Tim says hes not mad about the situation, he has decided to “get’em back”. He invited his subscribers and viewers to send out the following tweet:

@calpizzakitchen black button ups are the lamest shit ever!!! #CaliporniaSkeetzaKitchen

A Twitter Search will show an ever increasing amount of tweets pouring in minute after minute with the #CaliporniaSkeetzaKitchen hash tag.

12 most annoying types of Facebookers

CNN has compiled a list of the 21 most annoying types of Facebook users.  Among this list include pretty much every type of Facebook user you’d come across. The list ranges from “The Chronic Inviter”, to “The Lurker”.

Its a pretty comprehensive list but I couldn’t help but wonder where the “Post everything I find remotely interesting even though other people probably wont care about it but Ill post it anyway-er” was, or the “Write lyrics from songs nobody has ever heard-er”.

Much like these annoying Facebook habits, a lot of current online marketing habits are ineffective due to their inability to interest & engage the audience. Identify, and deliver the content your consumer wants.

Check out CNN for the full list.
